Vandaag hebben we onze eerste “grote” workshop gehouden met onze boeren. We hadden om 9:30 afgesproken met Johnston en hij was keurig op z’n Keniaans op tijd…..maar 45 minuten later. Onderweg even gestopt om te tanken. Dat doen we elke dag. Ze zijn hier niet gewend om een tank vol te gooien, maar ze tanken voor elke reis voor een bepaald bedrag. Daarna fruit gekocht onderweg voor de lunch. Je koopt hier fantastische mango’s en ananas voor nog geen € 2,-, schoon gemaakt en wel.
In Cheptais zaten er al een aantal boeren op ons te wachten, maar de meesten waren nog druk bezig op hun veldjes. Ze verwachten dat het vandaag vroeg zou gaan regenen, dus nog even een paar klusjes afmaken.
Bart heeft de spits afgebeten met een paar korte presentaties over Spint, Bacterial Speck, Trips en Tuta Absoluta. We hebben gebruikt gemaakt van een portable beamer en dat werkt geweldig. We konden nu foto’s laten zien en de mensen konden meeschrijven met de presentaties. Het is elke keer weer mooi om te zien hoe onze boeren meedoen met zulke sessies.
Daarna heeft Michiel een presentatie gegeven over Hybride zaden en het investeren in zulke zaken en over het in de markt zetten van de tomaten.
Als afsluiting zou Erik een presentatie doen over Bacterial Wilt. Bacterial Wilt is samen met Bacterial Speck een van de grootste problemen bij onze boeren. Erik gaat staan en alle boeren zitten keurig netjes klaar om de presentatie aan te horen, zegt Erik dat hij helemaal niet van plan is om een presentatie te geven. De boeren moeten zelf komen met de oplossing!
Alle boeren krijgen een beurt en uiteindelijk zijn er tien punten die meehelpen om Bacterial Wilt te voorkomen. Dat waren er vier meer als de zes punten die Erik zelf had voorbereid. Mooi voorbeeld waaraan we kunnen zien dat er op het gebied van kennis in de hele groep al veel aanwezig is.
Na deze groepssessie bleef de vraag natuurlijk “waarom is Bacterial Wilt nog steeds zo’n probleem, terwijl ze de oplossing weten. Ook deze vraag hebben we in de groep gelegd. Als eerste kwamen er allemaal oorzaken die buiten de boeren zelf lagen, maar uiteindelijk kwamen ze er toch achter dat de belangrijkste oorzaak bij de boeren zelf ligt. In het kort; tomaten leveren gewoonweg teveel op, dus teeltwisseling vinden ze zonde van het geld en ze letten te weinig op hygiëne.
Bacterial Wilt zal de komende tijd echt nog wel een probleem blijven, maar onze boeren weten goed wat ze moeten doen. Ze zijn toch ook een beetje ondernemers, dus de risico’s die ze nemen horen er bij.
Na deze intensieve sessies zijn we de velden opgegaan. De gewassen staan er goed bij. Ze gaan de komende tijd in ieder geval in deze gebieden echt een berg tomaten plukken. Op sommige gewassen zie je wat blauwe stippen van de koper die ze gebruiken. Andere gewassen hebben wat last van Spint, maar niets wat echt uit de hand loopt.
Een van de boeren die we hebben bezocht was heel bewust aan het proberen met verschillende hybride rassen, om te zien welke het beter deden. Ze hebben als groep ook een aantal kassen gekregen van de overheid. Ze hadden bij deze boer dus een prachtige kas staan, maar die staat al een half jaar leeg. Omdat ze eigenlijk geen idee hebben hoe ze het moeten aanpakken. Ze kunnen de komende tijd aan de slag in die kas. Ik heb ze beloofd dat we in het najaar zullen kijken of het een beetje is gelukt.

Joint effort
Today we held our first major workshop with our farmers. We had agreed that Johnston would pick us up at 9.30 and he arrived bang on time – Kenyan time – 45 minutes later. We stopped off for petrol en route. We do that every day. In this country they aren’t used to filling their tanks completely; they just put in a certain amount before every trip. We also stopped to buy fruit for lunch. You can get fantastic mangoes and pineapples for less than €2 here – cleaned and ready to eat.
A few farmers were already waiting for us in Cheptais, but most were still busy working in their fields. They are expecting rain this morning so they have to get a few jobs done first.
Bart got the ball rolling with a couple of short presentations on spider mite, bacterial speck, thrips and Tuta absoluta. We used a portable projector and it worked really well. We showed photographs and the farmers took notes on the presentations. It’s always great to see our farmers joining in with these sessions.
Then Michiel gave a presentation on hybrid seeds and investing in these kinds of things and on marketing your tomatoes.
To finish off, Erik was supposed to give a presentation about bacterial wilt. Along with bacterial speck, bacterial wilt is one of the biggest problems facing our farmers. Erik stood up and all the farmers sat quietly waiting for the presentation to start. And then Erik said that he wasn’t going to give a presentation at all – the farmers had to find the solution themselves!
All the farmers got a turn, and they ended up with ten points that can help prevent bacterial wilt. That’s four more than the six Erik had prepared himself! A great example that shows how much knowledge there already is in the group.
Of course, after this group session the question remained: “Why is bacterial wilt still such a problem if they already know how to solve it?” We also put this question to the group. First they suggested all kinds of causes that were beyond the control of the farmers, but ultimately they realised that the main cause lay with the farmers themselves. In short: tomatoes simply yield too much, so they think crop rotation is a waste of money and they pay too little attention to hygiene.
Bacterial wilt will remain a big problem going forward, but our farmers are well aware what they need to do. They are also entrepreneurs to a certain extent, so the risks they take are just part of doing business.
After these intensive sessions, we went down to the fields. The crops are looking good. They will definitely be picking a mountain of tomatoes here. On some plants you can see some blue specks from the copper they are using. Other plants are affected by spider mite but it’s not really getting out of hand.
One of the farmers we visited was trying out different hybrid varieties to see which did better. They were also given some greenhouses by the government as a group. So there was a wonderful greenhouse on this farm but it had been empty for six months because they didn’t actually know how to use it. They will be getting started with this greenhouse soon. I promised we would come back in the autumn to see how they are getting on.

Dzisiaj przeprowadziliśmy pierwsze „duże” warsztaty z naszymi rolnikami. O 9:30 umówiliśmy się z Johnstonem, który był bardzo punktualnie jak na kenijskie warunki... spóźnił się tylko 45 minut. Po drodze zatrzymaliśmy się tylko, żeby zatankować. Tak jest zresztą każdego dnia. Tutaj nie tankuje się do pełna, ale przed każdą podróżą napełnia się bak za określoną kwotę. Potem po drodze kupiliśmy owoce na lunch. Można tu kupić fantastyczne mango i ananasy za jedyne 2,- euro.
W Cheptais czekało na nas kilku rolników, ale większość pracowało ciężko na swoich poletkach. Według prognoz dzisiaj miało padać, więc musieli dokończyć jeszcze różne prace.
Bart rozpoczął od kilku krótkich prezentacji na temat przędziorków, bakteryjnej cętkowatości, wciornastków i skośników pomidorowych. Po raz kolejny skorzystaliśmy z minirzutnika, który doskonale się sprawdza. Mogliśmy pokazać zdjęcia, a ludzie mogli robić notatki z poszczególnych slajdów. Za każdym razie przyjemnie ogląda się, jak nasi rolnicy biorą aktywny udział w takich sesjach.
Potem Michiel przeprowadził prezentację na temat nasion hybrydowych, inwestowania w takie nasiona i wprowadzaniu pomidorów na rynek.
Na koniec Erik pokazał kilka slajdów na temat zgnilizny bakteryjnej. Zgnilizna bakteryjna jest wspólnie z bakteryjną cętkowatością jednym z największych problemów dla naszych rolników. Erik wstał, a wszyscy rolnicy grzecznie siedzieli, aby wysłuchać jego prezentacji, ale Erik zupełnie nie planował robić żadnej prezentacji. Rolnicy sami mieli wymyślić rozwiązanie!
Wszyscy rolnicy mieli okazję się wypowiedzieć, a na koniec przedstawiono dziesięć punktów pomagających w zapobieganiu zgniliźnie bakteryjnej. Było to o cztery punkty więcej niż przygotował Erik. To dobry przykład, który świadczy o tym, że grupa dysponuje już dość dużą wiedzą.
Po tej sesji grupowej pozostaliśmy oczywiście z pytaniem: „dlaczego zgnilizna bakteryjna wciąż stanowi tak wielki problem, choć znamy rozwiązania?”. Również to pytanie zadaliśmy całej grupie. Na początku omówiliśmy różne przyczyny, które są niezależne od samych rolników, ale w końcu doszliśmy do tego, że najważniejsza przyczyna leży jednak po ich stronie. Krótko mówiąc – pomidory zwyczajnie nadmiernie obradzają, przez co płodozmian jest dla nich zwykłą stratą pieniędzy, a także zbyt mało uwagi poświęcają higienie.

U tego rolnika postawiono więc piękną szklarnię, ale od pół roku jest pusta, ponieważ w zasadzie nie wiadomo, jak się zabrać do jej użycia. W najbliższym czasie jednak zacznie się tam coś dziać. Obiecałem im, że jesienią sprawdzimy to i ocenimy, jak im idzie.
