Een fantastische dag!

Vandaag hadden we echt een fantastische dag. Vanochtend wel ietsje later begonnen, dus Anja heeft de weddenschap verloren. Als eerste zijn we naar de minister van landbouw gegaan. We hebben met deze man gesproken. Hij wist van ons project af en is bijzonder blij met wat we doen en niet alleen om de simpele reden dat als de boeren wat verdienen ze ook belasting kunnen betalen. Na een leuk gesprek en een discussie over hoe om te gaan met het helpen en sterker maken van de lokale boeren zijn we naar Cheptais gegaan.
In een klein gebouwtje hebben we gesproken met het production comittee. Als eerst hebben we uitgezocht wat nu precies hun taak is. Een van de belangrijkste taken van dit commitee is om de boeren verder te helpen met kennis en ze te linken aan de juiste kennispartner. Om direct de proef op de som te nemen om te zien of ze hiertoe in staat zijn, kwam Juan met het idee om de presentatie door een van de boeren zelf te laten doen.
Titus de voorzitter van de PMO nam het woord en legde keurig in Swahili uit wat we vorige dagen hebben verteld, waarom dit belangrijk was en hoe ze dit moesten implementeren. Het verhaal werd compleet gemaakt met informatie uit voorgaande bezoeken. Het was zelfs zo compleet dat Juan er eigenlijk niets meer aan toe kon voegen. Echt heel erg gaaf om te zien dat er zoveel blijft hangen en dat ze dat in eigen woorden kunnen reproduceren.
Daarna zijn we naar de clusters Chemsais en Kapkoto geweest. In Chemsais waren zeer grote verschillen te zien tussen nieuwe leden en leden die al langer bij de club horen. Zo was er een nieuw lid en daarbij leek het of we 4 jaar terug in de tijd waren, terwijl de chairman van Chemsais een veldje tomaten had staan wat bijna te mooi was om waar te zijn.
Zodra je een veldje op stapt dan komt Juan helemaal tot leven. Zo ook deze keer. Hij zette Sara (een stagair van ADS) samen met Titus aan het werk om wat we net hadden behandeld in de praktijk te brengen. Het resultaat zien jullie op de foto. Het begint al aardig op de buitenteelten in Spanje te lijken.
Daarna hebben we Kapkoto bezocht. Dit is van oudsher de beste loactie. Op een of andere manier zijn ze hier nog wat verder dat op andere locaties. De voorzitter van Satebu CBO had samen met zijn buurman een groot veld met een hybride ras staan, voor het eerst. Er is in de praktijk een fors verschil tussen de niet hybride rassen en de hybride rassen. Deze mannen gaan echt een berg kilo’s oogsten van een goede kwaliteit!
We zijn uitgenodigd door de overheid om in een van de kassen te komen kijken. Dat hebben we vandaag gedaan. Het zag er prima uit. Een gewas wat redelijk begint te lijken op onze gewassen, aan de draad in een kas. De kennis bij deze groep was nog niet groot, maar wat ze hadden gedaan klopt. We hebben ze verteld hoe wij draaien en zakken en hebben een haak voor ze getekend. Nu liggen te tomaten op de grond als ze klaar zijn om te oogsten, dat is zonde. We hopen dat we ze wat verder hebben kunnen helpen en zo ook daar een goede oogst te krijgen.
Tijdens de workshop hebben we de boeren beloofd om langs de agrovet te gaan, om te kijken welke meststoffen ze hier verkopen. Juan heeft namelijk een simpele manier van bemesten aan de boeren geleerd. Ze wisten nog van de vorige keer wat er wanneer nodig was, alleen konden ze het nog niet in de praktijk brengen. In Bungoma zit de grote agrovet die de kleinere in de dorpen bediend. We werden keurig ontvangen en hebben met die mensen gesproken over verschillende meststoffen en niet te vergeten koper. De eigenaar heeft ons beloofd dat hij ervoor zou zorgen dat koper beschikbaar is voor de boeren en we kunnen het voorbeeld van Juan nu met de hier beschikbare meststoffen duidelijk maken.
Morgen hebben we alweer de laatste dag met de boeren. We geven een grote workshop en gaan daarna met ze eten. In kerk van Cheptais is een begrafenis, dus we hebben een andere locatie gehuurd. We zijn benieuwd en blij met wat we tot nu toe hebben gezien en gehoord. Het is echt mooi om te zien dat wij als Looije zo’n 6000 kilometer bij ons vandaan een verschil kunnen maken!

A fantastic day!

Today we had a fantastic day. We got going slightly later this morning so Anja lost the bet. First we went to see the Minister of Agriculture. He knew about our project and is delighted with what we are doing – and not just for the simple reason that when the farmers are earning they can also pay their taxes! After a nice chat and a discussion about how to go about helping the local farmers and making them stronger, we headed over to Cheptais.

In a small building there we spoke to the production committee. First we found out precisely what they do. One of the committee’s main tasks is to provide knowledge for the farmers and link them to the right knowledge partner. To put this to the test straight away and see whether they are able to do this, Juan came up with the idea of having one of the farmers do the presentation himself.

Titus, the chair of the PMO, took the floor and explained in Swahili what we had told them over the past few days, why it was important, and how they should put it into practice. His explanation was rounded off with information from previous visits. In fact, it was so complete that Juan had nothing more to add. It’s great to see how much information sticks and that they can reproduce it in their own words.

Our next port of call was the Chemsais and Kapkoto clusters. In Chemsais we could see very marked differences between new members and more long-standing ones. For example, there was one new member whose crop looked like we had gone back in time by four years, while the chairman of Chemsais had a field of tomatoes that was almost too good to be true.

As soon as you step into a field, Juan totally comes to life. And he did this time too. He got Sara (a work placement student from ADS) and Titus together to put what we had just been talking about into practice. You can see the result in the picture. It’s already starting to look like our outdoor crops in Spain.

Then we visited Kapkoto. This has always been the best location. They are a little further ahead here than the other locations in various ways. The chairman of Satebu CBO and his neighbour have a large field where they are growing a hybrid variety for the first time. In practice there is a marked difference between non-hybrid and hybrid varieties. These men really will be harvesting a mountain of good quality tomatoes!

We were invited by the authorities to take a look in one of the greenhouses. And we did that today. It looked great. The crop was already beginning to look like our crops, growing on wires in a greenhouse. The group did not yet have a great deal of knowledge but what they had done was just right. We told them how we turn and lower the plants and drew a picture of a hook for them. At the moment the tomatoes are laid out on the ground when they are ready for picking – not good! We hope we were able to help them a bit so that they get a good harvest there too.

During the workshop we promised the farmers we would drop in on the agrovet to see what fertilisers they sell here. Juan had taught the farmers a very simple method of fertilising. They knew from last time what needed to be done and when, but they were not yet able to put it into practice. The big agrovet that services the smaller ones in the villages is in Bungoma. We got a lovely welcome and talked to the people there about different fertilisers and, of course, copper. The owner promised to make sure copper was available for the farmers, and we can now illustrate Juan’s example with the fertilisers available here.

Tomorrow is already our last day with the farmers. We will be holding a big workshop, and afterwards we will have a meal together. There is a funeral at the church in Cheptais so we hired a different venue. We are delighted with what we have seen and heard so far. It really is wonderful to see that Looije can make a difference 6000 kilometres away from home!

Fantastyczny dzień!

Dzisiejszy dzień był naprawdę fantastyczny. Dzisiaj zaczęliśmy trochę później, więc Anja przegrała zakład. Na początku pojechaliśmy spotkać się z ministrem rolnictwa. Mieliśmy więc okazję z nim porozmawiać. Wiedział o naszym projekcie i szczególnie cieszył się z tego, co robimy, a nie tylko z prostego faktu, że rolnicy mogą zarabiać więcej i płacą od tego podatek. Po ciekawej rozmowie i dyskusji na temat pomocy i wzmacniania lokalnych rolników, pojechaliśmy do Cheptais.
W małym budyneczku rozmawialiśmy tam z tzw. „production comittee”. Na początku staraliśmy się dowiedzieć, czym dokładnie się zajmują. Okazało się, że jednym z najważniejszym zadań tego komitetu jest pomaganie rolnikom w pogłębianiu wiedzy i umożliwianie im nawiązywania relacji z właściwymi partnerami w celu zdobywania wiedzy. Aby bezpośrednio sprawdzić, jakie są ich możliwości, Juan wpadł na pomysł, aby jeden z rolników sam przeprowadził prezentację.
Titus, przewodniczący PMO, zabrał głos i wyjaśnił w języku Suahili, co mówiliśmy w poprzednich dniach, dlaczego było to ważne i jak rolnicy powinni to wcielić w życie. Wystąpienie uzupełnił jeszcze informacjami z poprzednich naszych wizyt. Było to wręcz tak kompletne, że Juan w zasadzie nie mógł nic więcej dodać. Wspaniale było widzieć, że są oni w stanie przyjmować tak dużą wiedzę i że potrafią to przekazywać następnie własnymi słowami.
Potem pojechaliśmy jeszcze do grup Chemsais i Kapkoto. W Chemsais widoczne były bardzo duże różnice między nowymi członkami, a rolnikami, którzy należą do klubu od dłuższego czasu. Na początku spotkaliśmy się bowiem z nowym członkiem i wyglądało to, jakbyśmy cofnęli się w czasie o jakieś 4 lata, podczas gdy przewodniczący grupy z Chemsais miał pole pomidorów, które było wręcz zbyt piękne, aby było to prawdziwe.
Kiedy tylko wchodzimy na jakieś pole, w Juana wstępuje nowe życie. Tak było również i tym razem. Zaangażował on Sarę (stażystkę z ADS) do wspólnej pracy z Titusem, aby wdrożyć w praktykę wszystko to, o czym wcześniej mówiliśmy. Rezultaty możecie zobaczyć na zdjęciach. Zaczyna to bardzo ładnie przypominać uprawy zewnętrzne w Hiszpanii.
Potem odwiedziliśmy jeszcze Kapkoto. To od dawna najlepsze miejsce pod względem upraw. Z jakiegoś powodu są oni tutaj zawsze nieco dalej niż rolnicy w innych rejonach. Przewodniczący Satebu CBO po raz pierwszy, wspólnie z sąsiadem założył duże pole z odmianą hybrydową. W praktyce istnieje duża różnica między gatunkami niehybrydowymi a hybrydowymi. Ci rolnicy zbiorą naprawdę kilogramy dobrej jakości pomidorów!
Zostaliśmy zaproszeni przez władze rządowe, aby zaglądnąć do jednej ze szklarni. Właśnie dzisiaj to zrobiliśmy. Wszystko wyglądało doskonale. Rośliny zaczęły przypominać już nasze rośliny rosnące na linkach w szklarni. Grupa ta nie ma jeszcze może zbyt wielkiej wiedzy, ale wszystko zrobili prawidłowo. Opowiedzieliśmy im jak obwiązujemy i opuszczamy rośliny, a także narysowaliśmy im haczyk. Teraz pomidory gotowe do zbioru leżą na ziemi, co jest wielkim błędem. Mamy nadzieję, że udało nam się im jeszcze trochę pomóc i również tam będą mieć dobre zbiory.
Podczas warsztatów obiecaliśmy rolnikom, że sprawdzimy w Agrovet, jakie nawozy są tutaj sprzedawane. Juan nauczył rolników prostego sposobu nawożenia. Wiedzieli oni z poprzedniego razu, co i kiedy było potrzebny, nie mogli jedynie wprowadzić tego w praktykę. W Bungoma znajduje się duże Agrovet, które zaopatruje mniejsze sklepy w wioskach. Zostaliśmy miło przyjęci i rozmawialiśmy z tymi ludźmi o różnych nawozach, a także o miedzi. Właściciel obiecał nam, że zadba o to, aby miedź była dostępna dla rolników i teraz możemy wyjaśnić przykład Juana na podstawie dostępnych tutaj nawozów.
Jutro spędzimy ostatni dzień z rolnikami. Zrobimy duże warsztaty, a potem zjemy wspólny posiłek. W kościele w Cheptais odbywa się pogrzeb więc wynajęliśmy inne miejsce. Jesteśmy ciekawi i zadowoleni z tego, co do tej pory widzieliśmy i słyszeliśmy. Cudownie jest widzieć, że jako Looije możemy robić różnicę również 6000 kilometrów od domu!

Un día estupendo

Hoy ha sido un día estupendo. Hemos empezado con algo de retraso por la mañana, así que la suposición de Anja no se ha cumplido. Lo primero, hemos ido a ver al ministro de Agricultura. Ya conocía nuestro proyecto y está encantado con lo que estamos haciendo; y no solo porque cuando los agricultores tienen ganancias, también pueden pagar los impuestos... Después de una animada charla y de discutir cómo proceder con la ayuda a los agricultores y su fortalecimiento, nos hemos puesto en camino para Cheptais.

Allí, en un pequeño edificio, hemos hablado con el comité de producción. Primeramente nos hemos enterado exactamente de lo que hacen. Una de las tareas principales del comité es proporcionar información a los agricultores y ponerles en contacto con quienes poseen dicha información. Para comprobar esto de inmediato y ver si son capaces de llevarlo a cabo, a Juan se le ha ocurrido la idea de pedirle a uno de los agricultores que hiciera la presentación.

Titus, el presidente del PMO, ha tomado la palabra para explicar en Swahili lo que les hemos dicho en estos días, por qué es importante y cómo ponerlo en práctica. Su explicación se ha completado con información sobre las visitas anteriores. De hecho, ha sido tan completa que a Juan no le ha quedado nada que añadir. Es fenomenal ver cuánta información queda retenida y lo que pueden reproducir en sus propias palabras.

Nuestra siguiente parada han sido los grupos de Chemsais y Kapkoto. En Chemsais hemos podido ver diferencias manifiestas entre los miembros nuevos y los más antiguos. Por ejemplo, había un miembro nuevo, cuyo cultivo parecía que había vuelto a las condiciones de hace 4 años, mientras que el presidente de Chemsais tenía un campo de tomates casi demasiado perfecto para ser real.

En el momento en que pisas un campo, Juan se llena de vida. Y esta vez igual. Ha puesto a Sara (una estudiante en prácticas de ADS) y a Titus a llevar a la práctica lo que acabábamos de discutir. El resultado se puede ver en la foto. Empieza a parecerse a nuestros cultivos al aire libre en España.

Luego hemos visitado Kapkoto. Este ha sido siempre el mejor emplazamiento. Aquí están algo más adelantados que en los otros en varios aspectos. El presidente de Satebu CBO y su vecino tienen un campo muy grande en el que están cultivando por primera vez una variedad híbrida. En la práctica, hay una notable diferencia entre las variedades hibridas y las que no lo son. Esta gente está recogiendo un montón de kilos de tomates de buena calidad.

Las autoridades nos habían invitado a echar un vistazo a uno de los invernaderos. Y es lo que hemos hecho hoy. Tenía un aspecto espléndido. El cultivo está empezando a parecerse a los nuestros, con las plantas creciendo sobre alambres en un invernadero. El grupo todavía no cuenta con grandes conocimientos, pero lo que están haciendo está muy bien. Les hemos explicado nuestro sistema de enrollado y descuelgue de las plantas y les hemos hecho un dibujo de un gancho. En este momento los tomates listos para recoger están en el suelo, y eso no es nada bueno. Esperamos poderles ayudar un poco para que puedan conseguir una buena cosecha aquí también.

En el taller de trabajo les habíamos prometido que pasaríamos por el almacén de productos agrarios, pare ver qué fertilizantes se venden allí. Juan les ha enseñado a los agricultores un método de fertilización muy simple. De la última vez, saben lo que se tiene que hacer y cuándo, pero todavía no han podido ponerlo en práctica. El almacén más grande que abastece a los de menor tamaño en los pueblos está en Bungoma. Allí nos han dado una cálida bienvenida y hemos hablado con la gente sobre los distintos fertilizantes y, por supuesto, sobre el cobre. El dueño ha prometido garantizar la disponibilidad de cobre para los agricultores y ahora podemos ilustrar el ejemplo de Juan con los fertilizantes que hay aquí.

Mañana es ya nuestro último día con los agricultores. Vamos a celebrar un taller de trabajo final y después comeremos todos juntos. En la iglesia de Cheptais hay un funeral, así que hemos tenido que alquilar otro local. Estamos encantados con todo lo que hemos visto y oído hasta ahora. Es realmente fantástico que Looije pueda marcar una diferencia a 6000 kilómetros de casa.
