Vanochtend zijn we om 9.30 vertrokken voor een bezoek aan de tomaten velden.
Ook het bezoek van twee greenhouses stond op het programma. Het eerste greenhouse dat we bezochten was een folie boogkas van ca. 200 m2. Het eerste wat mij opviel was een bak met chloorwater om schoenen te ontsmetten echt super. Druppelbevloeiing zag er strak uit. In de kas links eigenlijk een prima tomaten gewas. Rechts een redelijk drama om te zien. Gewas lag nog op de grond maar had inmiddels een stengellengte van ca. 1.60 m. Oorzaak ijzerdraad om touw aan vast te knopen was te laat binnen gekomen. Rolgevel om ventilatie te regelen was kapot omdat buis gebroken is en ging maar voor de helft open.
Bij het tweede greenhouse ook ontsmettingsbak. Op het eerste gezicht een redelijk gewas. Alleen het barstte er van de Thrips. Zoveel dat er op sommige planten geen bloei meer was.
Het eerste bezoek aan de velden vorige week viel mij relatief mee. Ik had verhalen meegekregen van veel onkruid en met name Bacterial Wilt. Vandaag viel het in meer en mindere mate tegen. Vooral de impact van Bacterial Wilt. Het niet juist hanteren van hygiëne maatregelen om verdere besmetting te voorkomen en het niet stringent toepassen van vruchtwisseling zijn belangrijke oorzaken van de problemen. Dit is al eerder aangegeven en het blijkt nodig te zijn om dit te blijven herhalen.
Na het bezoek aan de velden zijn we terug gegaan naar de kerk in Cheptais. Hier hadden we een meeting met afgevaardigden van de boerenorganisaties. Bart en ik hebben de evaluatie van de ochtend gedaan met daarbij aanbevelingen. Michiel heeft een presentatie gegeven over leiderschap. Daarna ging Barts Balloon Shop open en kregen de kinderen ballonnen prachtig vonden ze dat.
Alles is anders, wat is het verschil?
Alles is hier natuurlijk anders dan in Nederland. Maar hoe groot zijn de verschillen? Op het oog natuurlijk lijkt het erg groot, maar is dat ook zo vraag ik me af. Een paar voorbeelden.
Mildred de vrouw van Johnston reed vorige week een stukje met ons mee. Zei is net als Johnston priester. Ze zei de ze bezig was met de voorbereiding van een huwelijksceremonie. Zo kwam het gesprek op de bruidsschat. Wat is gebruikelijk? Gemiddeld is dat twaalf koeien en een geit. Het hangt af van de opleiding en schoonheid van de dame in kwestie. Dit lijkt voor ons Nederlanders natuurlijk veel. Wij betalen niets en in veel gevallen vragen we niet eens toestemming. Maar uit ervaring weten Michiel en ik dat de echte kosten van een vrouw bij ons pas komen na het huwelijk. Bart is aan het rekenen.
Een ander voorbeeld. Mobiele telefoon begint ook hier redelijk gangbaar te worden, alleen lastig opladen als er geen stroom is in het dorp. Geen probleem er zijn gewoon kleine kioskjes met generator waar je telefoon kan opladen. Even wachten in het zonnetje en klaar. Bart en Michiel sjouwen een powerbank mee. Ja kan ook.
Op de velden zien we veel verschillen. Bij sommige is het redelijk tot goed voor elkaar. Bij andere is er nog veel te doen. In Nederland zijn de verschillen tussen de bedrijven onderling ook groot

This morning we left for the tomato fields at 9.30 am.
Visits to two greenhouses were also planned for today. The first greenhouse we visited was a polytunnel with an area of about 200 m2. The first thing I noticed was a tank of chlorinated water for disinfecting shoes – really good to see. The drip irrigation system looked good too. The tomato plants inside the greenhouse on the left looked great. But there was quite a drama going on on the right-hand side. There were plants lying on the ground that had grown to a good 1.6 m in length. The reason for this was that the metal wire they use to tie the strings to had arrived late. The roller shutter used to regulate air flow was broken because the tube was broken and only opened half way.
There was also a disinfection tank in the second greenhouse. At first glance, the crop looked reasonably good. Except it was completely covered in thrips. There were so many that some of the plants were no longer flowering.
The impression I got from our first visit to the fields last week was better than I had expected. We had been told stories about a lot of weeds and bacterial wilt. Today the impression we got was not so good – particularly because of the impact of bacterial wilt. The main reasons for these problems were failure to apply proper hygiene measures to prevent the spread of contamination and not adhering strictly to crop rotation. This is something we had already told them and we obviously need to keep repeating the message.
After visiting the fields we went back to the church in Cheptais where we had a meeting with delegates from the farmers’ organisations. Bart and I gave our evaluation of the morning along with some recommendations. Michiel gave a presentation on leadership. Then Bart’s Balloon Shop opened for business and all the children got balloons, which they loved.
Everything is different. But what is the difference?
Everything here is different from in the Netherlands, of course. But how big are the differences? At first glance they seem to be quite big, but are things really that different, I wonder? A couple of examples.
Mildred, Johnston’s wife, came with us on one journey last week. Like Johnston, she is a church minister. She told us she was busy preparing for a wedding ceremony. And then the conversation turned to the bride’s dowry. What is a typical dowry? On average, it would be 12 cows and a goat. It depends on how well educated and beautiful the lady in question is. That sounds a lot for us Dutch people, of course. We don’t pay anything, and in many cases we don’t even ask for consent! But Michiel and I know from experience that what a woman really costs only becomes apparent after you get married. Bart is working it out.
Another example. Mobile phones are gaining in popularity here too. But they are difficult to charge if there is no power in the village. No problem – there are small kiosks with generators where you can charge your phone. A short wait in the sun and it’s done. Bart and Michiel have brought their own power banks with them. That’s also an option.
We can see a lot of differences in the fields. Some of them look quite good, but there’s still a long way to go in others. There are also big differences between farms in the Netherlands.
Everything is different, but are the underlying differences as big as they seem?

Dzisiaj rano o godzinie 9.30 wyruszyliśmy oglądać pola, na których uprawiane są pomidory.
W programie była również wizyta w dwóch szklarniach. Pierwszą z nich była foliowa szklarnia łukowa o powierzchni ok. 200 m2. Pierwszą rzeczą, która rzuciła mi się w oczy, był zbiornik chlorowanej wody do odkażania butów – super pomysł. System nawadniania kropelkowego wyglądał porządnie. W szklarni po lewej stronie rośliny prezentowały się bardzo dobrze. Po prawej jednak było dość dramatycznie – roślina leżała wciąż na ziemi, choć długość łodygi wynosiła już ok. 1,60 m. Przyczyną było to, że drut do zamocowania linki nie dotarł na czas. Ściana roletowa odpowiadająca za regulację wentylacji była zepsuta, ponieważ pękła rura i roleta otwierała się tylko do połowy.
W drugiej szklarni również był zbiornik do odkażania. Na pierwszy rzut oka rośliny były w porządku. Pełno było jednak wciornastków. Do tego stopnia, że niektóre rośliny przestały kwitnąć.
Wrażenia z pierwszej wizyty na polach były dość pozytywne. Opowiadano nam wiele historii o zgniliźnie bakteryjnej. Dzisiaj wrażenia były mniej lub bardziej negatywne. W szczególności stopień występowania zgnilizny bakteryjnej. Ważnymi przyczynami tego problemu było nieprawidłowe stosowanie środków higieny w celu zapobiegania dalszemu skażeniu, a także nie dość konsekwentne przestrzeganie płodozmianu. Nie raz zwracaliśmy już na to uwagę, ale widocznie trzeba to cały czas powtarzać.
Po obejrzeniu pól wróciliśmy do kościoła w Cheptais. Spotkaliśmy się tam z przedstawicielami organizacji rolników. Razem z Bartem oceniliśmy poranne wizyty, a także podzieliśmy się naszymi zaleceniami. Michiel przeprowadził prezentację na temat liderstwa, a potem Bart otworzył swój sklepik z balonami i wszystkie dzieci były zachwycone.
Wszystko jest inne, ale w czym tkwi różnica?
Wszystko jest oczywiście inne niż w Holandii, ale jak wielkie są te różnice? Na pierwszy rzut oka wydają się być one bardzo duże, ale zastanawiam się, czy faktycznie tak jest? Podam kilka przykładów.
Mildred, żona Johnstona, w ubiegłym tygodniu towarzyszyła nam przez chwilę w podróży. Podobnie jak Johnston jest ona pastorem. Mówiła, że zajmuje się właśnie przygotowaniami do ślubu. I tak doszliśmy do kwestii posagu. Co obejmuje on tradycyjnie w Kenii? Średnio jest to dwanaście krów i koza. Wszystko zależy od wykształcenia i atrakcyjności panny młodej. Holendrom może się to wydawać dużo, bo my nic nie musimy dawać, a w wielu przypadkach nawet nie musimy pytać o zgodę. Ale Michiel i ja wiemy z doświadczenia, że prawdziwe koszty posiadania żony przychodzą dopiero po ślubie. Bart dopiero to wszystko oblicza.
Inny przykład. Telefony komórkowe również tutaj zaczynają być czymś zupełnie codziennym, jedynie trudno je naładować, jeśli w wiosce nie ma prądu. Nie jest to jednak problemem, bo działają małe kioski z generatorami, w których można naładować swój telefon. Wystarczy chwilę poczekać na słońcu i gotowe. Bart i Michiel wszędzie biorą ze sobą z kolei ładowarkę powerbank. Tak też można.
Na polach widać jednak wiele różnic. U niektórych jest poprawnie lub dobrze, a u innych jest jeszcze wiele do zrobienia. W Holandii różnice między poszczególnymi przedsiębiorstwami są również duże.
