De eerste dag

Na een goede nachtrust en ontbijt werden we geheel volgens schema om 9 uur opgehaald door Johnston. Als eerste zijn we naar de government of Bungoma gebracht waar we bij een vergadering van de agriculture afdeling aansloten. Na een voorstelronde heeft Michiel verteld over ons project en heeft Juan de bedrijfsfilm van Aguilas getoond om te laten zien hoe wij tomaten telen. Daarna nog 2 presentaties van hun afgevaardigden gevolgd en vragen beantwoord. Als afsluiting kregen wij de traditionele thee (thee met heel veel hete melk) met chepais, een worstje en ei.
Daarna onderweg met een chauffeur en een meisje van ADS Helena naar. chepthais. Daar werden we verwelkomd door de kinderen van de school. de vouwblaadjes voor de kjnderen aan de juf overhandigd en de kinderen bedanken dan met de hele groep, Heel mooi om mee te maken.
Vervolgens met de boeren in gesprek, uiteraard begint de meeting met een gebed en voorstelronde. Op de meegebrachte flipover vellen is door een van de boeren de structuur uitgelegd en hebben we de agenda van deze week gemaakt en de issues die behandeld moeten worden. Hier kan Juan mee aan de slag 5 van de 6 punten betreffen namelijk de teelt.
Als laatste vandaag hebben we 3 velden bezocht van de boeren. Die met trots hun veld tonen. Het is heel goed om te zien hoe de boeren de adviezen uit de vorige jaren opgepakt hebben. weinig onkruid, geplant op geulen met een looppas ertussen. Het zag er goed uit. Uiteraard zijn er altijd punten die nog verbeterd kunnen worden, daar gaat de workshop morgen over.
De kinderen van de boeren verblijd met kleine cadeautjes en het is prachtig om te zien hoe de kinderen glunderen en hoe de tam tam in zo'n dorp werkt. Ook al kunnen we niet met ze communiceren, hun ogen zeggen genoeg en als ze je dan aankijken weet je dat ze ook graag een cadeautje willen krijgen.

Daarna weer terug naar het hotel in Bungoma en wachten we nu op het eten. Volgens Michiel is het uniek maar we hebben nu al voor de tweede keer een soepje vooraf gekregen.

Day 1

After a good night's sleep and breakfast we were picked up by Johnston right on schedule at 9 am. First we were taken to the Bungoma government offices where we attended a meeting of the Agriculture Department. After the introductions Michiel talked about our project and Juan played the Aguilas company video to show them how we grow tomatoes. This was followed by two presentations by their delegates and a question and answer session. Finally we were given the traditional tea (tea with a lot of hot milk) with chepais, a sausage and egg.

Then we were taken to Cheptais by a driver and a girl from ADS Helena. We got a warm welcome from the local schoolchildren there. We gave the teacher some origami sheets for the children and the whole group thanked us. It was lovely to see.

Next we spoke to the farmers. As usual the meeting started with a prayer and a round of introductions. One of the farmers explained the structure on the flipchart sheets they had brought along, and we drew up the agenda for the week and the issues we will be dealing with. This will give Juan plenty to be getting on with: five of the six points are about growing.

We ended the day with a visit to three of the farmers' fields. They showed off their fields with great pride. It's wonderful to see how the farmers have followed the advice we gave them in previous years: keeping weeds down, planting in channels with an access path down the middle. It all looked great. But of course there is always room for improvement, and that is what tomorrow's workshop is about.

We gave the farmers' children some presents, and it is fantastic to see such happy faces and how word gets around in these villages. Even if we can't communicate with them, their eyes say it all, and when they look at you you know they are hoping for a present.

Then we headed back to the hotel in Bungoma and we're now waiting for our meal. Michiel says it’s unique, but we have been given a soup to start with for the second time already.

Dzień pierwszy

Kiedy już dobrze się wyspaliśmy i zjedliśmy śniadanie, punktualnie o 9.00 przyjechał po nas nasz kierowca, Johnston. Najpierw udaliśmy się do siedziby władz w Bungoma, gdzie spotkaliśmy się z przedstawicielami wydziału rolnictwa. Kiedy już wszyscy się sobie przedstawiliśmy, Michiel opowiedział o naszym projekcie, a Juan pokazał film o zakładzie w Aguilas, aby przybliżyć nasz sposób uprawy pomidorów. Potem odbyły się jeszcze 2 prezentacje tutejszych oficjeli, a także był czas na udzielanie odpowiedzi. Na koniec poczęstowano nas tradycyjną herbatą (z bardzo dużą ilością ciepłego mleka) z chepais, kiełbaską i jajkiem.
Później pojechaliśmy do Cheptais wraz z naszym kierowcą i Heleną, przedstawicielką ADS. Zostaliśmy tam przywitani przez uczniów lokalnej szkoły. Przekazaliśmy nauczycielce trochę kartek do składania origami dla dzieci, za co cała grupa serdecznie nam podziękowała. Było to bardzo przyjemne.
Potem rozmawialiśmy z rolnikami, a spotkanie oczywiście rozpoczęło się od modlitwy i przedstawienia się. Na flipcharcie, którzy ze sobą przywieźliśmy, wyjaśniliśmy rolnikom strukturę i plan na najbliższy tydzień oraz zapisaliśmy kwestie, którymi będziemy chcieli się zająć. Juan będzie miał sporo roboty, bo 5 z 6 punktów dotyczy uprawy.
Na koniec dnia odwiedziliśmy jeszcze 3 pola. Ich właściciele z dumą nas po nich oprowadzali. Bardzo miło oglądać, jak rolnicy wykorzystują porady udzielone w poprzednich latach. Nie ma zbyt wiele chwastów, rośliny rosną na redlinach, między którymi znajdują się porządne ścieżki.
Wszystko wyglądało dobrze.
Oczywiście zawsze znajdzie się coś, co można poprawić, ale jutro zajmiemy się tym podczas warsztatów.
Dzieci rolników były zachwycone drobnymi upominkami i bardzo miło było patrzyć na ich radość w rytmach wioskowego tam-tama. Mimo że nie jesteśmy w stanie się z nimi porozumieć, ich oczy mówią wszystko. Wystarczy w nie spojrzeć, aby mieć pewność, że bardzo lubią dostawać prezenty.

Potem wróciliśmy do hotelu w Bungoma i czekaliśmy na jedzenie. Według Michiela to wyjątkowe, ale już po raz drugi dostaliśmy zupę przed głównym daniem.

Z niecierpliwością czekamy na jutro!

El primer día

Después de una buena noche de descanso y del desayuno, Johnston nos ha recogido puntualmente a las 9 de la mañana. Primero, nos han llevado a las oficinas del gobierno de Bungoma, donde hemos asistido a una reunión del departamento de agricultura. Tras las presentaciones, Michiel ha hablado sobre nuestro proyecto y Juan ha proyectado el vídeo de la empresa en Águilas, para mostrarles como cultivamos los tomates. Después ha habido dos ponencias de sus delegados y una sesión de preguntas y respuestas. Finalmente, nos han ofrecido el té tradicional (con una buena cantidad de leche caliente) y chepais, un tipo de salchicha y huevo.

Luego, el chófer y una chica de ADS, Helena, nos han llevado a Cheptais. Allí, los niños del colegio local nos han dado una calurosa bienvenida. Le hemos dejado al profesor unas hojas de origami para los niños y todo el grupo nos ha dado las gracias. Ha sido encantador.

A continuación, hemos hablado con los agricultores. Como de costumbre, la reunión ha empezado con una oración y una ronda de presentaciones. Uno de los agricultores ha explicado la estructura en el pizarrón que habían traído y nosotros hemos anotado la agenda para la semana y los temas que iremos tratando. Juan va a tener un montón de qué ocuparse: cinco o seis puntos son sobre el cultivo.

Hemos terminado el día con una visita a tres de los campos de los agricultores. Nos los han mostrado llenos de orgullo. Es una gran satisfacción ver cómo han seguido los consejos que les dimos en años anteriores: reducir las malas hierbas, plantar en surcos con pasillos de acceso en el centro. Todo tiene un aspecto estupendo. Pero, por supuesto, siempre hay algo que se puede mejorar, y para eso es el taller de trabajo de mañana.

Les hemos dado algunos regalos a los niños de los agricultores y es un placer ver las caras tan felices y cómo corre la voz en los pueblos. Aunque no podamos comunicarnos con ellos, sus ojos lo dicen todo, y cuando te miran, sabes que están esperando un regalo.

Luego hemos vuelto al hotel en Bungoma y ahora estamos esperando la cena. Michiel dice que será única, pero ya es la segunda vez que nos han dado una sopa para empezar.

Tengo muchísimas ganas de que llegue mañana.
