Workshops

Vanmorgen zijn we om 9:15u vertrokken met opnieuw de chauffeur van de dominee, deze jongeman heet Daniel en is voor Keniaanse begrippen strak op tijd. Vandaag hebben we een flinke dag voor de boeg. We beginnen met het bezoeken van de velden in Chesikaki. Deze velden liggen wat hoger in de bergen waardoor ook het landschap erg mooi is en dankzij de hoogte prachtige uitzichten als gevolg. De velden zien er redelijk uit, maar er is wel aandacht nodig voor het spuiten en juiste gebruik van chemicaliën. We geven de mensen praktische adviezen mee om het beter te doen. Als we verder willen voor de workshop wil 1 boer heel graag dat we nog op zijn veld komen kijken, we rijden een stuk en na het bezoek aan dit veld wil ook de buurvrouw graag nog wat advies hebben en zo geschiede. Na een paar uur velden gaan we naar de collection centre van Chesikaki, een grote container op een verhoging, en begint de eerste workshop. Michiel Bontenbal gaat hier de theorie van Sinek aan de comités van Satebu uitleggen en probeert de leden zelf de toepassing te laten maken, dit lukt vrij aardig! Aansluitend doen we even een korte pauze waarna Vincent Looije verder door gaat op de technische kant van telen. Punten als teeltplanning, spuitschema’s, planten opkweken en gebruik van chemische middelen worden ruimschoots behandeld. We proberen de mensen te laten nadenken over het zelf opkweken van de zaden en hebben voorbeelden verzameld bij onze bezoeken aan andere telers in de omgeving, want nu laten ze dit nog doen door een bedrijf. Rond 17:00u willen we gaan afsluiten maar wacht ons een hele leuke verassing. De dames van deze leden hebben een maaltijd voor ons bereid, het is banaan samen met mais in de vorm van een soort koek met rundvlees erbij. Het smaakte en vulde iedereen uitstekend. Tijdens het eten is er een flinke regen en onweersbui over de bergen binnen gekomen en dat maakt de wegen weer lekker modderig. Na een rit van 1,5 uur komen we weer veilig in ons hotel aan en bestellen we ons diner. Daarna gaan we nog voorbereiden op morgen want dan wachten opnieuw 2 workshops voor alle boeren van Satebu di we mogen geven in het cluster Cheptais. We hebben er nu alweer zin in!

Workshops

This morning saw us leaving by 9:15 hrs, again with the vicar’s driver; this young man is called Daniel and by Kenyan standards, he is exactly on time. Today, we had quite a schedule ahead of us. We started by visiting the fields in Chesikaki. These fields are located a little higher up in the mountains, which results in a beautiful landscape and stunning views. The fields looked reasonably good but some attention is required as regards spraying and the correct use of chemicals. We provided the people with some practical advice for improving this. As we wished to move on and start the workshop, farmer number 1 really wanted us to have a look at his field, so we drove for a while and after this visit, the woman next door to him also wanted some advice and so on and so forth; we were happy to oblige. After a few hours screening on the fields, we went to the Chesikaki collection centre, a large container on a platform and the first workshop started. Michiel Bontenbal explained the Sinek theory (a simple method for arriving at inspiring leadership) to the Satebu committees and tried to get the members to apply this themselves; they managed this quite well! Immediately after this, we had a brief break after which Vincent Looije continued with the technical side of cultivation. Things like crop planning, spraying schemes, plant propagation and the use of chemical agents were discussed extensively. Currently, seeds are grown into young plants by another business so we tried to get the people to consider cultivating the seeds themselves and gave them examples collected during our visits to other growers in the area. Around 17:00 hrs, we wanted to conclude the workshop but a nice surprise awaited us. The wives of these members prepared a special meal for us, consisting of bananas and maize, made into a sort of cake and served with beef. It all tasted great and was really filling. While we were eating, some serious rain and a thunderstorm arrived from across the mountain, so the road was going to be nice and muddy again. After a 90 minute drive, we arrived back in our hotel safe and sound and ordered our evening meal. All that was left to do was preparing for tomorrow’s 2 workshops for all the Satebu farmers, which will take place in the Cheptais cluster. We are already looking forward to that!

Warsztaty

Dziś rano o godz. 9:15 znów wyruszyliśmy w trasę z kierowcą pastora. Ten młody człowiek ma na imię Daniel i jeśli oceniać go według kenijskiego poczucia czasu, trzeba przyznać, że jest punktualny. Dzisiaj mieliśmy przed sobą dużo atrakcji. Rozpoczęliśmy od zwiedzania pól w Chesikaki. Są one położone w nieco wyższych partiach gór, więc krajobrazy są piękne, a wysokie położenie sprawia również, że można podziwiać cudowne widoki. Pola wyglądały dość dobrze, ale trzeba tam zwrócić większą uwagę na opryski i użycie właściwych środków chemicznych. Daliśmy tamtejszym rolnikom praktyczne porady, jak można lepiej robić pewne rzeczy. Kiedy zbieraliśmy się już, aby pojechać na warsztaty w innym miejscu, jeden z rolników poprosił nas, żebyśmy zobaczyli też jego pole. Pojechaliśmy więc kawałek dalej i zobaczyliśmy to pole, ale potem żona rolnika chciała jeszcze usłyszeć nasze rady. Po kilku godzinach kontrolowania pól, udaliśmy się do collection centre w Chesikaki, czyli dużego kontenera na wzniesieniu. Tam rozpoczęliśmy nasze warsztaty. Michiel Bontenbal wyjaśniał członkom komitetów z Satebu teorię Sinek (prostego modelu dotyczącego inspirującego przywództwa), a także wypróbowywał z nimi różne zasady w praktyce, co było dość wesołe! Potem zrobiliśmy krótką przerwę, po której Vincent Looije dalej wgłębiał się w techniczne aspekty upraw. Szczegółowo omówione zostały takie punkty, jak planowanie upraw, harmonogram oprysków, przygotowanie sadzonek i użycie środków chemicznych. Ponieważ teraz rozsady dostarcza rolnikom osobna firma, próbowaliśmy zainspirować ich do rozważenia samodzielnej uprawy sadzonek z nasion i podzieliliśmy się przykładami związanymi z naszymi wizytami u innych hodowców w okolicy. Około godz. 17:00 chcieliśmy już kończyć, ale czekała na nas jeszcze miła niespodzianka. Żony rolników przygotowały bowiem dla nas potrawę – banany z kukurydzą w formie ciasta z wołowiną. Było to bardzo smaczne i wszyscy się bardzo najedli. Podczas jedzenia znad gór przyszedł silny deszcz i burza, a to znów sprawiło, że drogi zamieniły się w błotniste kałuże. Po jeździe trwającej 1,5 godziny znów bezpiecznie dotarliśmy do hotelu i zamówiliśmy kolację. Potem przygotowywaliśmy się jeszcze do jutrzejszego dnia, w którym czekają nas aż 2 sesje warsztatowe dla wszystkich rolników z Satebu, które odbędą się w grupie Cheptais. Już nie możemy się doczekać!
